Virtualbox update to 3.2 – A error occurred during the signature verification

In Ubuntu machine I have installed Virtualbox with Windows so I can run software for Windows. Last time I tried to upgrade the machine using the apt package manager of Ubuntu (sudo apt-get update) I got the following error:

A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used.GPG error: http://download.virtualbox.org karmic Release: Οι παρακάτω υπογραφές ήταν μη έγκυρες: BADSIG 54422A4B98AB5139 Oracle Corporation (VirtualBox archive signing key)

And so I couldn’t update the Virtualbox to version 3.2. The reason seems to be simple. The Virtualbox project now is under Oracle, so after the project changed name, the verification signature is different.

Searching the ubuntu forums others had the same problem too I found how to update the keys:

wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

But again the same error poped up. Searching a little more, it came, thanks to Luigi’s tip out that I should clean also the lists of the apt updates. And here’s what I did:

sudo apt-get clean cd /var/lib/apt mv lists lists.old
sudo mkdir -p lists/partial sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then I ran again:

wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/oracle_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -

Finally everything seem to go ok. I removed the old Virtualbox 3.1 and installed the new one Virtualbox 3.2:

sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-3.1
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-3.2

The new Virtualbox is installed and everything works like a charm.
